Built in 1929, this extraordinary Steinway & Sons Model A combines the craftsmanship of a Steinway grand with an Aeolian Duo-Art reproducing system, offering a fascinating glimpse into the golden age of the reproducing piano.
The Duo-Art was developed to reproduce performaces captured on specially designed piano rolls, including elements of musical expression beyond the notes themselves. This Model A retains an Aeolian Duo-Art reproducing system and is accompanied by a selection of piano rolls.
The player mechanism operates with the rolls currently accompanying the piano; however, its full reproducing capabilities, including dynamic expression, have not been professionally evaluated.
Nearly a century after its creation, this Model A remains an impressive example of Steinway craftsmanship. Its richly figured wood case, carved details and grand piano construction give the instrument a presence that reflects the era in which it was made.
